We spied purple, fiery orange and rosy pink blobs clinging to the rocks on our early morning beach hike in northern California. At closer inspection, we discovered a jumble of colorful starfish basking in the sun. Just one of many delights we enjoyed during a long weekend here on the coast. Each morning before breakfast we hiked from our lodging at Howard Creek Ranch in Westport and explored the beach. The low tide exposed tide pools, along with starfish, sea anemones, tiny crabs, barnacles and more. Later after a huge home-cooked family-style breakfast, we'd spend the day exploring other sights along the coast.

Mendocino, one of our favorite places, often stands in for a New England village on TV and in the movies. The historical society walking tour offers a good introduction to the town. We enjoy exploring the small shops or art studios, walking the headlands, and eating out at one of the many fine restaurants.

Just north of town, the recently restored 100-year-old Point Cabrillo Lighthouse provided us with a great tour. The old keeper’s quarters are now a first class B&B open to the public. North from here, Highway 1 twists and turns up the coast with gorgeous views, pristine state beaches, the former lumber town of Fort Bragg, and remote village of Westport.

To the right are photos from our weekend, and below are reminders and newsy items:

Our column entitled The Road Less Traveled appears in each quarterly issue of RV Journal magazine (www.rvjournal.com), a western regional RV travel magazine. The current issue includes our column on Stehekin, Washington. Plumas County Fall colors will appear the next issue. Here is a link to another story we wrote for Travel World Magazine's Summer issue called Family History http://www.travelworldmagazine.com/ . We recommend viewing the flash version to see our story and photos in a magazine format.

So where else have we been and where are we going next? For a week we were lighthouse keepers in Washington and you can read all about it on our Postcard Blog. We're off soon to Chicago and Wisconsin to connect with some family roots and we'll be posting stories about our trip once we are on the road.
